Storytelling is an inexpensive and easy-to-organize way of supporting the language skills (and history) curriculum. All I need is a quiet space. In 2013 I helped launch a Lads and Dads twilight reading group at Sandye Academy. I used part of the Hereward and an entertaining yarn of my own devising. The evening was a great success - though the chip supper may have helped! In 2015 I had a successful morning in Shortstown Primary (see "satisfied customers). In late 2016 I performed the letters of Walter Croft (WW1) for Bedford Academy and was invited back in February 2017 to perform war poetry.
I don't just deliver the stories. I show how I use the sources, how they are developed, how the language is chosen. Students can improve their own oral skills by developing a story worth telling from a basic plot. The Hereward suits KS 2/3. For older KS 2 I have three Egyptian tales - genuine ancient stories that illuminate the beliefs and values of the culture. I would love the opportunity to tell the Tristan and Iseult to KS 4. If you have a programme that could benefit from an injection of variety and enthusiasm, please give me a call or send an e-mail.
